##### [[20221115|<]] 17th April 2023 - FOSSAsia 2023 [[20230809|>]]
I've generally been hesitant to go for conferences because they tend to end up just being one big sales convention with everyone just posturing and trying to pitch why their company or product is where you should park your dollars into. But I got the push to go for FOSSAsia Summit 2023 when I read on the HSG mailing list that there was a discount code that would also support HSG.
And i'm so glad I went.
If anything it got me to spend 3 days in the company of people who are really passionate about their craft. With it being opensource, everyone's goal was less about 'sales' and more about 'adoption' and 'contribution'. And I absolutely loved that. It means people wanted to come up and push forward things that work - that could actually make a difference instead of 'how many x% ROI' (I'm genuinely sick of these types of convos in the crypto/NFT/Finance space).
Perhaps some lessons learnt from how opensource communities operate should be incorporated into how Excalibur is governed/operationalised. There's so much tooling that needs to be done and I can't do it alone :/

Some notable moments for me:
- Meeting U-zyn again after so long and finally making time to understand how Bitcoin ordinal NFT transfers work
- Understanding how OpenAttestation works
- Getting a glimpse into how other opensource communities function
- The workshop held by the NUS High folks about Graph Neural Networks - This session totally reminded me how brilliant young ppl can be and how much of the math I grew up with has been forgotten haha
